COMMUNICATION
WITH LEARNERS WHO ARE DEAF-BLIND: Summer Institute
McFarland,
Stephanie;Miles, Barbara;Silberman, Rosanne;Riggio, Marianne;Smithdas,
Robert;Smithdas, Michelle. 1994.
This
program was offered through the Perkins Deaf-Blind Training Project, a major
goal of which is to provide summer training to improve services for learners
who are deaf-blind. The course provides a comprehensive analysis of the
communication needs of learners who are deaf-blind. The impact of dual sensory
loss on communication development, assessment procedures, and strategies to
develop nonsymbolic and symbolic communication are addressed. Specific
communication methodologies and a variety of communication modes, including
augmentative systems, are presented.

LIFE
SKILLS : BASIC SELF-CARE FOR THE DEAF-BLIND (COMMUNICATION, MOBILITY, AND
OTHERS):
Smithdas,
Robert
J. 1977.
This
presentation discusses the difficulty the deaf-blind have in communicating. It
describes several methods of communication now available for use by the
deaf-blind, but notes that even with these, deaf-blind people are necessarily
dependent on others to a greater or lesser degree for many of the ordinary
activities of daily living.

POINT/COUNTERPOINT:
Chen, D.;Smithdas,
R. J. 1995.
Chen and
Smithdas both attempt to answer the questions posed: How can the blindness
field be more responsive to the needs of persons who are deaf-blind? Given
limited resources of money, time, and personnel, can the field afford to be
more responsive? Each approach reflects the respondent's field of expertise:
Chen comes at the problem from the early intervention and schooling aspects,
while Smithdas looks at the problem from the young adult and older adult
angles.

BLINDNESS, July-August 1995, pp. 316-318.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
ASPECTS OF DEAF-BLINDNESS:
Smithdas,
Robert
J. (Deaf-Blind) 1981.
A review of
the unique psychological consequences of dual sensory impairment is presented.
Individuals who are deaf-blind may experience a sense of isolation and
loneliness, exhibit self-centeredness, develop unacceptable patterns of
behavior, etc. The author, himself a person who is deaf-blind, advocates for
assistance for people with severe dual impairment so that they can attain their
maximum potential, express their feelings, and live in dignity.
