VOCATIONAL SERVICES updates: last modified 02/14/2008 |
THIS IS THE MAIN PAGE OF "VOCATIONAL SERVICES" IN "TRAINING AND SUPPORT SERVICES"
The Vocational Services Program at HKNC is committed to assisting students to secure employment. Consumers' interests, abilities, training and support needs are assessed in order to identify a feasible vocational goal. When a student comes to HKNC with a specific career aspiration, the vocational team tries to identify community work experiences that will foster that goal. Individualized job exploration and training are offered at work sites both on- and off-campus. The department has carefully cultivated relationships with local employers that hire HKNC students while they are in training at our NY facility. Employers range from small, local Long Island businesses to large corporations, such as 1-800-flowers, Independent Living Aids, Filene's Basement, Michael's Arts and Crafts, Sears and St. Francis Hospital.

Job coaches are provided to assist students as they learn various skills required for the job. A typical work experience might involve a few days of work per week at an office supply store, preparing packages, binding copies and working with customers. Then, when the student is ready to return home, the vocational services department, the HKNC regional representative and vocational rehabilitation staff from their home state would try to place that person in a similar business setting in their local community. This model has helped hundreds of individuals who are deaf-blind find jobs around the country.
