Although we rely on federal funding to cover our annual operating budget, many important projects are funded by private philanthropy. The Center depends upon the generosity of individuals, foundations and the corporate community to help support the programs that ultimately make a world of difference in the lives of the individuals we serve.

The accomplishments of our agency's namesake, the incredible Helen Keller, continue to inspire both young and old around the world. Yet, everyday, people who are deaf-blind thrive unnoticed in mainstream society. They are mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, sisters, brothers and friends. Traveling in their communities with canes, dog guides or using public or para-transit systems, workers who are deaf-blind commute to jobs as administrators, teachers, editors, artists, data entry clerks and food service workers, to name a few.

Did you know that despite improvements in health care and diagnosis, the number of people who are deaf-blind is growing every day? Baby Boomers account for the largest segment of the population with combined vision and hearing loss. Understandably, many of these individuals do not self identify as "deaf-blind" because of the commonly held image of Helen Keller as totally deaf and blind from childhood. Yet, many of us probably know older adults who are experiencing hearing loss (although reluctant to acknowledge it) and vision loss through one or more of the four most common causes - diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. This combination of sensory loss can be devastating, not only to the individual but to family members struggling to provide support.
